HOW EFFECTIVE IS KETAMINE FOR DEPRESSION?

Most studies of ketamine for treatment-resistant depression administered one or more treatments over a period of several weeks. These studies have reported that ketamine provides significant relief from symptoms of depression for well over half of patients, who had not found relief from other treatments. Ketamine operates differently than other antidepressant medications. Ketamine increases glutamate release and enhances neuroplasticity via the NMDA receptors, leading to increased levels of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor).Ketamine treatment has also been shown to normalize activity in the brain’s network that is responsible for obsessive and negative thinking.

DOES KETAMINE TREAT ANYTHING OTHER THAN DEPRESSION?

Ketamine is commonly used to treat pain conditions, and shows promise for treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS WHEN TAKING KETAMINE?

We require that patients not drive home after a ketamine treatment and recommend not driving until the next day. There are no restrictions on non-treatment days.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WITH IV KETAMINE?

IV ketamine for depression is delivered through a series of infusions. The medicine is delivered intravenously into the bloodstream and the effects are immediately experienced. Research has shown that Ketamine treatment is effective in alleviating depression symptoms in 70 percent of those treated. Most patients experience positive effects within a few treatment sessions.

WHAT IS A TREATMENT COURSE LIKE?

A typical ketamine treatment is delivered twice per week for six weeks. This initial treatment is then followed by maintenance treatments to maintain a good response. You will be in the clinic for around 90 minutes per treatment. You will also follow up with your provider regularly during your course of ketamine treatment to monitor your response and progress. Besides our medical provider, you will have a team of dedicated medical and mental health professionals helping coordinate your care, delivering your treatments, and checking in on you during the process.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

  • Nausea
  • Dissociation (feeling disconnected from yourself, your thoughts, feeling, space and time)
